FAQ

Can you tell me a little about the YRCM environment?
We are extremely fortunate to have a wonderfully cultivated, serene & enchanting working environment. Anyone visiting our main studios in Richmond Hill will see how much effort has been put into creating just the right atmosphere for our young inspiring musicians.

What subjects does the York Region Conservatory of Music offer?
Piano, Voice, Violin, Guitar, Rudiments, Harmony, History, Analysis, Counterpoint, Pedagogy, Speech Arts, Musical Theatre & Drama.

Does the school sell or provide rental of instruments?
No.

When can I start my lessons?
Lessons can begin any time throughout the academic year. However, the best selection of times is available in May/June of each year (with a September start date). Lessons are arranged at a time convenient for the student & the teacher, usually once a week for either a 30, 45 or 60 minute lesson.

How much should I/my child(ren) practice?

Teachers usually expect students to practice regularly. 20 to 30 minutes a day for very young beginners is ideal. An hour or perhaps more each day may be necessary for more senior students, depending on their age & level.

Does the YRCM provide books?
The YRCM is not a book store. However, for convenience, Ms. Gilbert personally keeps on hand books that students may need so that parents do not have to drive around the city from store to store to obtain the necessary materials. These can be purchased directly from Ms. Gilbert (or front desk).

When is the school open?
The school is open by appointment only Tuesdays-Thursday 4-8:30pm & Saturdays 10-4pm. We are closed Mondays & Fridays at the head office location.

How do I choose the teacher that is right for me?

At your complimentary consultation with Ms. Gilbert, she will assist you in choosing the appropriate teacher & program according to your budget & goals.

Teachers are very carefully selected by Ms. Gilbert. We feel that it is pertinent for teachers to know how to deal with all ages & present music in an enthusiastic fashion to students. Highly motivating instructors with outstanding educational backgrounds provide excellent training using traditional & unique personal style. Our teachers are dedicated to helping students develop musically to their fullest potential. Although a student studies with one private teacher throughout the academic, there is benefit to explore our staff of instructors (whom all have an abundance of knowledge & talent to offer). Complete biographies of teachers are available upon request.

Our teachers are involved in continuous professional development through regular workshops, meetings & seminars. And, some continue to be active as performers.

How much do lessons cost?
Usually, teachers get paid according to their credentials & their experience. Prices vary also depending on the program selection. This is usually discussed in your initial interview.

Can I switch to a different teacher or discipline anytime throughout the year?
Yes. Students wishing to make a teacher or course change should submit a written notice to the office & allow 3-4 weeks for the school to accommodate you. Administration fee applies.

What happens if I miss a class?

Makeup lessons are arranged at a mutually convenient time between student & teacher if the absence is supported by a medical note or should the teacher cancel for an unforseen reason.

Without medical note, only if the teacher has time, she may give you up to TWO makeup classes maximum (out of common courtesy) in the summer only.

Should students be unable to attend the makeup day provided or should the student discontinue lessons at the YRCM before the month of June, there will be no refund or credit for the lesson(s) lost. Policies are outlined in the registration agreement.

Can I withdraw from lessons at any time?
Yes. 60 days written notice is required to terminate your registration agreement. Lessons within the 60 days should either be taken or forfeited. This period is nonrefundable. Please also keep in mind that the deposit prepaid at the beginning of the year/term is nonrefundable should you wish to discontinue classes. Should 60 days written notice not be received, the school has the right to request payment for those classes. Policies are outlined in the registration agreement.
